Ministerial Sanctification (목회적 성화)

 

Reflection I have always admired the Apostle Paul and the Apostle John. I see parts of myself in Paul’s fiery passion, yet I long to resemble John, whose temperament is different from mine—perhaps that is why I married a husband who is like John.

Paul was a man of dramatic experience and unwavering zeal, willing to lay down his life for the Gospel. As a goal-oriented strategist, he had clear missionary plans. Because of this firm nature, he once clashed with Barnabas over Mark and chose to part ways. Strategically, his plan to go to Asia Minor seemed superior, and he struggled at first to understand why God redirected him toward Macedonia.

However, God used these journeys not only to transform the world but to transform Paul himself. Later in his life, we see a changed man—one who forgave Mark, whom he had once rejected, and embraced him as a precious co-worker. This same Mark went on to write the Gospel of Mark. Furthermore, when Paul surrendered his own plans to follow God’s leading, he met Lydia, the jailer, and the Philippian believers who became the strongest supporters of his ministry.

My parents, who are in ministry, always tell me: "Ministry is not just for others; it is the process of the minister themselves being transformed." Through the process of ministry, we come to know ourselves and others more deeply, ultimately reflecting the heart of God. By living a God-centered life like Jesus, we experience the Kingdom of Heaven here and now.

In Acts 17, we see Paul encountering diverse responses. The Thessalonians were hardened and even traveled long distances to hinder his work. In contrast, the Bereans were "more noble-minded," receiving the word with eagerness and examining the Scriptures daily. Paul met people who treated him like a god and others who beat him to the point of death. Yet, he remained steadfastly God-centered.

Near the end of his life, Paul left a profound legacy for Timothy: "Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction" (2 Timothy 4:2). Paul lived out these words. Regardless of people’s reactions or his circumstances, he preached the Gospel, growing alongside his congregation through great patience and careful instruction. Today, I realize that this is the true essence of a pastor’s calling.

 

Today’s Prayer

• Lord, grant me Your heart—a heart of great patience and the wisdom for careful instruction.
• Lord, like the Apostle Paul, help me live a God-centered life, sharing the Gospel at all times and in every circumstance.
• Lord, give me the wisdom to discern Your voice for my life and for the precious congregation I serve, so that we may all grow together in Your grace. In Jesus' name, Amen.

 

저는 사도바울와 요한을 좋아합니다. 사도바울에게서 비슷한 면을 찾아서 좋고 저와 기질적으로 다른 요한을 보면서 닮아가고 싶어 좋아합니다. 그래서 제가 요한을 닮은 남편과 결혼을 했는지도 모르겠습니다.

사도바울은 극적으로 하나님을 체험했고, 복음을 향한 열정이 뜨거웠고, 목숨까지 바칠 정도로 단호한 사람이었습니다. 목적 지향적인 사람으로  선교전략이 분명히 있었습니다. 그랬기 때문에 사도바울은 바울과 마가를 두고 언쟁을 벌이다가 결별하게 되었고, 자신의 생각으로 소아시아로 가는 것이 분명히 전략적으로 탁월한데 마케도니아로 인도하시는 하나님이 처음에 잘 이해가 되지 않았습니다. 

사도바울은 3차 전도여행을 통해 이방인의 빛으로 하나님의 복음을 세계에 알린 역사적으로도 교회사적으로도 훌륭한 사람입니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 이 전도여행을 통해 다른 사람들만을 변화시키신 것이 아니라 사도바울도 변화시키셨습니다. 나중에 그는 전도여행 중 힘들다고 그만두고 떠난 마가를 용서하고 다시 받아주며 훌륭한 동역자로 인정합니다. 그 마가가 바로 마가복음을 쓴 사람이 되었습니다. 

그리고 하나님의 인도하심에 자신의 생각을 접고 따르었을 때 그는 빌립보 교인들을 만나게 되었습니다. 리디아를 만나고, 간수를 만나고, 나중에 선교의 든든한 후원자가 되는 빌립보 교인들과 함께 선교하게 되었습니다. 

목회를 하시는 저희 부모님은 늘 저에게 말씀하십니다. 목회는 다른 사람을 위해서 하는 것이라기보다는 목회자 자신이 변화되는 과정이다. 목회라는 과정을 통해 점점 자신을 알아가고 다른 사람을 알아가며 그 가운데에서 하나님의 마음을 닮아갑니다. 그리고 예수님처럼 하나님 중심의 삶을 살아가며 천국을 경험하게 됩니다. 

오늘 맥체인 본문인 사도행전 17장을 통해 사도바울의 여러 상황을 접하게 됩니다. 데살로니가 사람들은 마음이 굳어져 바울의 말을 잘 듣지 않고, 멀리까지 쫓아와 선교를 방해합니다. 그리고 베뢰아 사람들은 데살로니가에 있는 사람보다 더 신사적이어서 간절한 마음으로 말씀을 받고 이것이 그러한가 하여 날마다 성경을 상고하여 믿는 자들이 늘어났습니다. 

바울은 선교, 이방인 목회를 하면서 정말 다양한 사람을 만났습니다. 어떤 사람들은 신처럼 모시기도 하고, 어떤 사람들은 죽기 직전까지 때리기도 하였습니다. 그런데 바울은 여전히 한결같이 하나님 중심으로 복음의 사명을 감당합니다. 

죽기 직전 바울은 그의 사랑하는 디모데에게 유언과 같이 이렇게 말합니다. 

"너는 말씀을 전파하라 

때를 얻든지 못 얻든지 항상 힘쓰라 

범사에 오래 참음과 가르침으로 경책하며 경계하며 권하라" (디모데후서 4:2) 

바울이 삶으로 이미 보여주었습니다. 사람들의 반응에 상관없이 주어진 상황에 상관없이 그는 항상 복음을 전했습니다. 그리고 때로는 경책하기도 경계하며 권면하며 성도들과 함께 자라갔습니다. 그에게는 바로 오래참음과 가르침 (careful instruction)이 있었습니다. 이것이 바로 목회자가 해야할 본문임을 오늘 말씀을 통해 깨닫습니다. 

 

주여 목회자로서 제게 주님의 마음 오래참음과 가르침을 허락하여주소서 

주여 사도바울처럼 범사에 항상 복음을 전하는 하나님 중심의 삶을 살게 하여주시옵소서

주여 지혜를 주시어 하나님께서 제게 말씀하시는 것이 무엇이며, 제가 사랑하고 섬기는 성도님들에게 말씀하시는 것이 무엇인지 깨달아 함께 자랄 수 있게 하여주시옵소서
