An Invitation to be insufficient

Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. (2 Corinthians 3:5–6)

Paul says our sufficiency is from God. That means we must be in places where we truly need God. If I feel sufficient by myself, God may lead me to a place where I begin again and learn that I am not enough on my own. When we feel comfortable, we easily forget our need for God. In our small and comfortable world, there is little room left for Him.

It is painful to choose a place of insufficiency. It is hard to fight anxiety, insecurity, and uncertainty. Yet those are the very spaces where God can enter our lives and become our sufficiency.

Lord, to make room for You as my source of sufficiency, I accept Your invitation to be insufficient. I trust that You will be enough for me. One day, at Your heavenly feast, we will never be hungry or thirsty again in You. Amen.
