The Spirit as a guarantee



"He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body, we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord." (2 Corinthians 5:5-8)

To return home after being away, we must choose the right directions, step by step. Just as we cannot reach Patten without first passing through Bangor from Portland, the way we live today determines how we will face the journey to our heavenly home with God.

The Holy Spirit has been given to us as a "guarantee"—a divine assurance to guide us toward our final destination. Because of this, we can have great courage. Without the Holy Spirit, I would have no strength; I could not walk this unknown and insecure journey on my own.

Just as children simply trust and follow their parents' directions for going back home from the vacation, I choose to follow Him. I pray that our churches and our children will follow God’s direction together.

Prayer: Lord, I welcome the Holy Spirit as my guarantee. I choose to trust and obey in every small direction until I reach my heavenly home, my final destination. Amen.

  Scripture: Acts 16:25–34 In today’s M'Cheyne Bible reading, the passage from Acts invites us to reflect deeply on the nature of salvation. Paul and Silas, though unjustly imprisoned for the Gospel, chose to pray and sing hymns in the darkness. While their bodies were confined within stone walls, their souls remained profoundly free. Suddenly, a violent earthquake struck, and  the foundations of the prison were shaken.  The very core of their confinement gave way, the doors flew open, and everyone’s chains were unfastened. When Our Strength Ends, His Grace Begins

  Reflection Sarah was anxious. She had been in the Promised Land for ten years, yet the child God promised had not arrived. Faced with the uncertainty of her circumstances, Sarah decided to take matters into her own hands. In her frustration, she complained against the Lord. Because He had not yet granted her a child, she attempted to fulfill God's promise through her own human effort by using her servant, Hagar. In doing so, she diminished God, shrinking Him down to fit within the limits of her own small world and understanding. She tried to force God's will to happen through her own strength. This choice led to a heartbreaking outcome. Once Hagar became pregnant, Sarah was treated with contempt, leading Sarah to retaliate by harshly mistreating Hagar.
